Kirk Helmink Appointed Next Norris Trap Coach

Longtime Norris trap coach Keith Brunkow is retiring from his trap team extracurricular duties, and the next Norris Trap Team coach will be Kirk Helmink. Kirk is also an employee of the Norris School District, serving as a regular bus route driver for NSD #160 since 2012. Kirk is a 1979 graduate of Norris High School. A trap shooting enthusiast, Kirk was one of the first Norris students to compete in trap for the school, when the team was coached by Larry Shenkel in the mid-70's. One of his fondest memories was during his 8th grade year shooting on the first squad along side juniors and seniors during a heavy snowstorm in Des Moines Iowa.

“I just want to keep it going,” he said, describing the accolades that program participants have earned in individual and team shooting competition over the span of its existence. “The program has grown by leaps and bounds since I was a kid, and it has tremendous support from our parents and Trap Boosters. I look forward to working with the students and their families to not only continue the tradition of great shooters but also helping them mature as young men and women."

Kirk is proud of the academic all-conference recognition earned by so many shooters and will continue to make this a point of emphasis for the program in addition to competitive excellence on the trap range.

“The first point of emphasis in everything we do will continue to be safety,” said Helmink.

Helmink will be supported in his efforts by longtime Norris Trap assistants Tom Shea and Ed Cross.
